When I look at the little boy in this photo, I see my sweet son; but this boy was born just over one hundred years earlier. He is my maternal grandfather Everett Herman Proctor, circa 1915. The back of the photo says that the woman with him was his school teacher. At this time, the Proctors had moved from Columbia City to the area around Star Lake in Kent, Washington, so this woman must have been the teacher at the one-room Star Lake School at 272nd Street and Military Road. (The school appears to still be
there.)
It is funny how you can feel the mood in this yellowed photo, even after all of these years. Look at their expressions and body language. I think there was a school-boy crush at work here and I think it may have been a little bit mutual. (Obviously, Everett was very charming, just like his great grandson.) What do you think?

A lovely photo and wonderful that you can see the family resemblance today.
ReplyDeleteLovely picture. Its a strange pose, perhaps she's teaching him how to dance?
ReplyDeleteIs certainly is an odd pose for student and teacher, especially as he has her by the wrist. A lovely capture, mind you.

I have to agree with you, both in your reading of the photograph and your more general point about how one can feel the prevailing mood of a photograph almost 100 years after it was taken.Great picture and perfect Sepia Saturday material.
ReplyDeleteOh I know it is kind of funny when you look at your children or other family members and see other relatives that they take after! Great photo!
ReplyDeleteDance lessons. 1 2 3, 1 2 3, now dip. I can imagine them laughing and dancing in the street. She teaching him a few steps so he won't feel too awkward at the coming dance.
ReplyDeleteMy mother said that this teacher was a friend of the family and she thinks she vaguely remembers something about a "crush", so I may not have been too far off. She even used to know her name. I sure wish she remembered it! Thanks for all of the comments.
